Our Beliefs
Zion ...is a word from
the Christian Bible which means "where God dwells" or "the
community of God."
The United Church of
Christ (UCC)
...is a progressive
mainline denomination of thousands of churches. Our
roots go back to the Pilgrims and the Mayflower (1620's).
We have merged with several Christian groups along the way,
hence the word "United."
The UCC was the first
denomination to ordain an African-American as pastor (1785).
We were also the first denomination to ordain a woman
(1853).
Within the UCC, you
will find congregations across the land ranging from
conservative to liberal in flavor, and that's OK.
Respecting the uniqueness of each God-created person, we
seek to maintain the unity Christ offers us through him.
Our unity is not based
on language, nationality, sex, or current political wind,
but based on Jesus Christ and the life he offers us.
Because we strongly
affirm the worth God places on people, as a church we are
committed to being open and compassionate to all. Like
Jesus, we seek to practice love and justice, hope and peace.
The United Church of
Christ does not dictate to the local congregation what it
should do, but each congregation is free to respond to God's
call to faithful living. Linked together with other
churches, we do find that we are stronger and able to
accomplish so much more. |
